Remember the Design Your Dwelling competition we ran with Dwell magazine last year? The winner (in case you missed it) was a gentleman named Drew Wilgus from North Carolina. His prize included a physical model from Sweet Onion Creations, a model shop that combines 3D printing with hand-construction techniques.
The model they constructed of Drew's design is nothing less than spectacular. Better yet, they documented the process of building it and turned the footage into a great video:

This beats the heck out of the chipboard model I had to make for exhibition design last year in art school.
Fabulous design, great technical virtuosity in putting together the model.
Hmmm. There are other modelers using Sketchup, too, with possibilities just now being explored. Check out the paper models at www.papermodelers.com most of which are nowadays designed in 3d.

great job guys. can I ask how long it took? we build our models full scale for customers and sometimes it takes years hehehe. I ahve some footage on my site. happy new year

Wow, I am really impressed with the 3-D printing techniques combined with the hand-crafted assembly. The cable rail looked extremely tricky to build!

but I have one piece of advice to all of the modelmakers:
WEAR A MASK!
Excellent! Very impressive design and great model execution. When are you going to model the full life-size version.....I wanna move in.
The only other person I've seen do a similar quality model for me was a fellow we had working in the office who was totally into model railroading. He had glass in the windows and stone on the fireplace, etc, etc.
